Based entirely on open standards, the North East Texas Wireless Initiative http://www.netwi.org began broadcasting 802.11b wireless ethernet on 2.4Ghz across the Queen City/Atlanta area utilizing a technology known as wireless fidelity ("Wi-Fi"), which transmits information through the air using radio waves. Wi-Fi has been gaining popularity in recent times as companies across the country such as Starbucks and McDonald's have used the technology to set up wireless access points in public locations. The new technology is allowing small communities to set up Wi-Fi networks which provide superior broadband connectivity at significantly lower costs than are traditionally associated with broadband network access. N.E.T.W.I.'s mission is to deploy a Wi-Fi signal across the entire North East Texas region.
